A couple months ago I decided I wanted to get into this, so I took on a few "models" to let me snap their birth in exchange for letting me use their images for promos and to market myself as a birth photographer now for anyone who'd want to use me.
I have to say, for being a 'part time' photographer, I've been swamped with requests from people wanting me to snap their births! The biggest difference between me and another birth photographer is that I cannot guarantee 100% that I'll make the birth. Since I have a full time job, two kids, and other things, life may get in the way and I may not be able to make it. Any clients I take on need to fully understand this and be okay with it before I agree to snap their birth. And this may be a turn-off for some, which is fine, but until I can do photography full time I cannot guarantee that I'll be able to be at the birth.
Okay! Now that the logistics are out of the way, I wanted to share some of my favorite pics from the births I've done thus far. All of these are PG or PG-13 rated images. Yes, you see a baby entering the world for the first time. It's amazing. Magical. Incredible. A literal once in a lifetime experience. There is nothing sexual about these images, just the miracle and wonderfulness which is childbirth. If this isn't your cup-o-tea, maybe skip this post and go onto another one.
I really REALLY love capturing these moments for people and feel so honored that I've been able to do this thus far for these families and have them have these memories forever. The thing about births is that they are unpredictable -- where I stood for one will not be where I am for another. Some babies literally shoot out, others need help. This all happens within split seconds and I'm just there snapping like crazy hoping I'm capturing it! It's such a rush and so much more so than a wedding. It's crazy, I was always scared of doing weddings because it's a one-and-done event, but not births -- these I'm way more excited about (and they're arguably even more "high stakes" cause you get maybe one shot!) and love to do as much as I can.
I obviously shoot my births in color, but the only pictures I post are in black and white because they are so much more raw and powerful and beautiful.
Okay! I've rambled too much. Here are a few snaps from the recent births I've done and I literally get goosebumps looking back through these and remembering how incredible this was for the family, and how honored I still am today to have been a part of it.
No words. Just amazingly incredible. Birth photography is love.
